Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is celebrated Every February by giving flowers, candy and cards to our beloved ones. This is done in honor of Saint Valentine. Well, then, “Who is St. Valentine”? Let’s remember Valentine’s history!

According to the legend Valentine was a priest who was in service during third century Rome. The Emperor of the time named, Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II announced that single men would make better soldiers than those that were married. In view of this thought he declated marriage as outlaw for young men in hopes of building a stronger military base. It is believed that Valentine, decided this decree just wasn’t fair and started to marry young couples in secret. When Emperor Claudius II discovered about Valentine’s actions he had him executed.

On the other hand there is another legend that Valentine was a prisoner who fell in love with his jailor’s daughter. Before he was executed he sent the first ‘valentine’ himself when he wrote her a letter and signed it ‘Your Valentine’, words which is still used on cards today.

Perhaps we’ll never be able to learn the true identity and story behind the man called St. Valentine. But despite the obcsure origins February has been the month to celebrate love for a long time, dating clear back to the Middle Ages. In fact, Valentines ranks second only to Christmas in the number of greeting cards sent and received Another valentine figure you may be willing to learn about is Cupid (Latin cupido, “desire”).

In Roman mythology Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology is Eros, god of love. Cupid is often told to be a mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and humans with his arrows, causing them to fall in love.
